Many renowned professionals worked and lived in the area of the present-day Notranjska Regional Park. Johann Weikhard von Valvasor (The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola) and Franz Anton von Steinberg (A Thorough Report on Lake Cerknica) put Lake Cerknica on the world map, and their works also serve as reference books on life in the past.
Composer Fran Gerbič left a strong mark in the field of professional music education, operatic creativity and pedagogic work, whereas Jože Udovič's prose and translations earned him a host of awards and commendations. What Fran Gerbič achieved in the field of music, Maksim Gaspari achieved in painting. His works have made a strong impact on fine arts and he left behind numerous motifs of rural life, rituals and customs. Jože Debevec is most known for his translation of Dante's Divine Comedy, and General Rudolf Maister as a great fighter for Slovenia's northern border. Martin Krpan is a fictional character, depicted in a statue by sculptress Milena Braniselj and erected in front of the Kulturni dom Cultural Centre in Cerknica.
The Notranjska Regional Park is rich with monuments commemorating these renowned figures and their historic contributions.
