Mountain Pasqueflower

foto: Jošt Stergaršek

Long and cold winter, typical of the Notranjska region, not even for a second gives any hints of the Adriatic or Mediterranean influences on the flora in the Notranjska Regional Park. But immediately after the snow is gone, beautiful dark purple flowers emerge from their soil shelter.

Thick-haired mountain pasqueflower is a typical species of south-western Slovenia. In the Notranjska Regional Park, it reaches the northern boundary of its distribution in Slovenia and only thrives on the poor soil of extensively-managed meadows on sunny-side slopes.

So let's not harvest it because it is an endangered and protected species of Slovenia's flora. Besides, it is most beautiful in nature where it decorates meadows which haven't yet produced their green spring blanket.
